Fisheries & Seafood Economy

The seafood harvested from Mid-Atlantic waters is part of what makes the region’s culture and economy thrive. The health of our seafood resources is intimately tied to understanding the water in which they live. MARACOOS equips fishery managers, aquaculture operators, and seafood supply chains with real‑time and forecasted ocean conditions that influence shellfish and finfish survival and quality.

Our observing and modeling systems help detect early warning signs of ecological stress: from low‑oxygen “dead zones” and harmful algal blooms to changes in pH and salinity that affect shellfish beds. By integrating continuous observations with predictive models, MARACOOS helps industry stakeholders make informed decisions, reduce risk, and maintain the safety, reliability, and sustainability of Mid-Atlantic seafood for both markets and communities.

The projects in this section highlight how our ocean monitoring tools, near-real-time environmental data, and regional partnerships support sustainable fisheries and a thriving seafood economy.
