Webinar: What’s in the Water? Exploring Ecosystems Through Environmental DNA
Join MARACOOS and our partners from the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) and Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory for a webinar on how eDNA is being applied in real-world research and monitoring, and how these tools are helping scientists better understand and track changes in aquatic ecosystems.
Date: Jan. 26, 2026
Time: 11 a.m.-12 p.m. Eastern Time
About the Speakers:
Dr. Matt Ogburn is a Marine Ecologist and Senior Scientist leading the Fisheries Conservation Lab at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center. His lab focuses on understanding the biology and ecology of fishery species, the ecosystems that support them, and how this information can be applied in management and conservation. He applies environmental DNA approaches to a range of topics including evaluating responses of migratory fish to dam removal projects, food webs, and biodiversity monitoring. He also leads the Chesapeake Bay Barcode Initiative, which is compiling barcode libraries for fish and marine macro-invertebrates for the Chesapeake region.
Dr. Peter Thielen is a senior staff scientist with a background in molecular biology and genomics. His research focuses on advancing DNA and RNA sequencing to support rapid decision-making, including in the clinical, environmental, and national security domains. He currently leads multiple programs that focus on transitioning basic research approaches to operational environments, including viral genomic surveillance (e.g., influenza virus, SARS-CoV-2), characterization of genetically modified plant species, and the use of aquatic environmental DNA for ecological species monitoring.
