BioTrack is a collaborative effort to identify and monitor marine biodiversity hotspots where species share habitat. By combining satellite and acoustic animal tracking with environmental data and modeling, the project maps these hotspots and examines how they overlap with human uses such as marine sanctuaries and wind energy areas.
MARACOOS, along with neighboring IOOS Regional Associations SECOORA and NERACOOS, engages stakeholders to ensure the data products are practical, accessible, and valuable for decision-making in conservation, fisheries, and ocean management. The project makes open-access visualizations of marine species movements and biodiversity patterns available through the Marine Biodiversity Observation Network (MBON) Portal and the Animal Tracking Network (ATN).
Currently focused on the Western North Atlantic, Gulf of America, and Caribbean Sea, BioTrack aims to expand its framework globally, supporting better management of ocean spaces and a deeper understanding of how biodiversity responds to environmental change.
