Passive Acoustic Sensors

Passive Acoustic Monitoring Supporting Marine Species Research and Safety

MARACOOS partners use passive acoustic sensors to listen to the sounds of the ocean. These sensors detect vocalizations from whales and fish, helping scientists track species distribution and behavior. By continuously recording sound, passive acoustic sensors give a unique, non-invasive view of the ocean environment that complements other observational tools and supports research, safety, and ecosystem protection across the Mid-Atlantic region.
